A little over one year since Gallo, the #1 wine business and leading RTD spirits co, made its splashy entrance into beer thru its acquisition of Montucky Cold Snacks, and formed its intriguing malt beverage biz unit, co's quietly made significant strides in building its newest leg of growth. From aggressively hiring team members to consolidating distribution networks, devising strategies, investments and adding fuel to what's workin', Gallo's going thru a "learning curve" that "we knew would be there" in working thru the malt beverage distrib network, cco Britt West told INSIGHTS in wide-ranging chat. Tho "it's hard to call them just a malt network" these days, he quipped. Co's "been really diligent about making sure we understand what it takes to be successful" in this network and devised an "entirely separate" management and customer development team led by industry vet Liz Tomic. But Gallo's ambitions as a total alc beverage supplier truly span all categories. Asked about M&A oppys vs in-house innovation, Britt responded: "we're open for business." "We're interested in both organic growth and inorganic growth," and co's been "very active on both fronts," he acknowledged. But M&A, "you can't always count on" while innovation, "you should be able to count on" with a "consistent pipeline," always "know[ing] what you're working on next." When it comes to beer, "one has to face reality," and if Gallo wants to be a total alc bev supplier, "you need to be in the biggest categories." Beer is "still by far the biggest category volumetrically," and "within that we believe core lager still has a great [role] to play."Gallo will also "constantly review our route to market," Britt added, when asked about High Noon distribution moves to beer networks in NJ and CA and potential for similar moves in other mkts. That's always a "continuous process," he stated. "Quite frankly, [we] didn't ask the wholesaler landscape to change," but "it changed," and "we need to change with it." High Noon still can unlock "a second wave of growth," in Britt's view, encouraged that the brand is still sourcing 63% of its sales from "outside" of hard seltzer, according to data co sees. Focusing on new consumers that "haven't fully adopted the brand yet" remains an oppy, particularly out west where the brand, big as it is, is "still incredibly underdeveloped." Move to Reyes network there is predicated on the belief that High Noon can be "much bigger in the West."Montucky Making Biggest Strides On Prem; Up Double Digits in Off-Prem Scans Since Jun Transitioning Montucky Cold Snacks into Gallo and its preferred network of distribs "was hard," and co "knew it was going to be hard." Trends were impacted thruout the last yr as a result. But after working together internally, with distribs and retailers, Montucky is starting to grow again. In natl off-premise scans, Montucky sales are up strong double digits since Jun with avg price per case up more than 5% to ~$27/case. But "the most encouraging piece is the on premise," said Britt, pointing to big wins at events, festivals, music venues and finding the right accounts across focus mkts. PacNW and Nashville are standout mkts outside of core Rocky Mountain region, particularly with "on-premise penetration" in Nashville, Britt added. "The spiritual home of Montana" is seeing a surge too as tourists come thru during peak summer season, bulking up presence during Under the Big Sky festival."What you're seeing in the recent trends" is "the coming together of a year's worth of work and integration by the brand teams," Gallo and Montucky sales teams and distribs, plus customers "believing that Gallo's going to do what they say they're going to do." Goal is to "carry the momentum out of summer" and into ski season. Gallo remains excited about "the idea of this" as "a next generation lager brand," said Britt. That notion, "the whole call of a 'Cold Snack,'" and that Montucky attracts 21-40 yr-olds and retains them "better than any other brand in the beer industry" is "what attracted" Gallo to the brand, "even if it's small." It's "out-punching above its weight class" and participating in a "new American lager set" that's "emerging" at retail as part of "the premiumization in domestic lager."VMC, Salt Point, Ten Ball RTDs Growing Regionally; Beach Juice Test Among its various RTD brands going primarily thru malt bev networks, VMC Cocktails, Salt Point and Ten Ball brands stand out most so far. Lucky One vodka lemonade is Gallo's standout launch this yr, but network is more mix and match between beer and wine & spirits distribs, Britt acknowledged. Co's also been testing new wine-based RTD called Beach Juice this yr, sold in 500ml tetra paks that position brand against BeatBox.In CA, Salt Point has "the highest velocity per point of distribution of any RTD," said Britt. Co's "also really happy with Ten Ball" and "how it's performing in the southeast," just finishing a visit to MS where the job done there and "consumer traction" has been "terrific." VMC has made the biggest inroads so far on natl scale even while limiting footprint to 6-7 states across the Southwest plus Chicago, IL and CO, focused most on designing a product "specifically" for Mexicans and Mexican Americans, from taste profile, ABV, branding, graphics and "national pride" perspectives. Who better to represent the latter than boxing star Canelo Alvarez, Britt underscored. Momentum is translating on "both sides of the border," and as is true in beer, "great brands&hellip;don't know borders, they know consumers." Impressively, new Tamarindo flavor "ran out of stock twice" this summer. Key for VMC as it expands distribution is to "follow the path of our consumer where they are" and "meet them there" without spreading too broad across too many accounts, Britt emphasized.Wine Still an "Enormous Portion" of Total Revs; Spirits Co for 50 Yrs; Malt Bevs Since 1985; New Legs Total alc bev portfolio is also nothin' new for Gallo, Britt reminded. Wine remains "the hallmark of the business," and "still represents an enormous portion of our total revenue." But co first got into spirits in 1975 with brandy, and first got into malt bevs with Bartles and Jaymes in 1985, then "predominantly" going thru malt bev distribs. Gallo is always "thinking about the end consumer" and as Britt and co think about that now, it's taking shape as a "dusting off, or reinvigorating segments&hellip;that we actually have been in" and "go[ing] deeper into." RTDs, malt bevs and traditional beer are "just other legs of the stool."
