Another day, another craft collective addition. Baltimore-based Heavy Seas, Maryland&#39;s largest craft brewery, announced it's joining B3 Beverage Company, "an emerging East Coast craft beverage platform," uniting 4 sizable craft and contract brewers in Two Roads, Yards, Bald Birds and now Heavy Seas. "This was a strategic acquisition &mdash; Heavy Seas is now a full member of the B3 platform," Caroline Sisson, Heavy Seas' marketing director and daughter of founder Hugh Sisson, shared with CBN. "The intent is to preserve what makes Heavy Seas iconic & a Maryland/regional craft staple, while empowering the brand with the tools, scale, and resources of the larger B3 network. It's a true partnership designed to build long-term value for both teams and our consumers." The move comes just as Heavy Seas' 30th anniversary is on the horizon (Dec 8, 2025), seeking to steady the sails amid a more turbulent time in US craft."The craft beer and beverage industry is at an inflection point," Hugh acknowledged in announcement this morn. "By combining resources, we create efficiency, scale, and reach that would be difficult for any one brewery to achieve on its own." This new partnership "gives each brand the ability to thrive while staying true to its roots. It's a way to face future challenges together&mdash;stronger, smarter, and more sustainable," he added.Around Half a Mil Bbls of Collective Contract Capacity Contract production is clearly a key piece of the B3 puzzle. Recall, the platform was officially formed just a few months back (see May 30 issue). Even before the addition of Heavy Seas, B3 likely had between 400-500K bbls of production capacity compared to ~60K bbls of own brand volume. Addition of Heavy Seas will again expand capacity more than own brand volume following a tough stretch for the brewer and craft more broadly. Heavy Seas peaked around 45K bbls, tho its beer volume dropped to 24.6K bbls sold specifically in MD for 12 mos thru Jun 2024. Still, despite a challenging landscape, Heavy Seas "has shown encouraging resilience and growth this year," said Caroline, citing outperformance of core brands like Loose Cannon and TropiCannon. She also pointed to "notable momentum in innovation and seasonals," driving "strong engagement both on- and off-premise, positioning the brand for continued success heading into 2026."Expanded Capacity, Distribution & Accelerated Innovation; "Best of Both Words" Under the B3 banner, these brands seek to build "an integrated beverage platform designed to expand production capacity, streamline operations, unlock broader distribution, and accelerate innovation," announcement notes. Then too, the partnership "allows us to leverage shared production across facilities when it makes sense, while keeping our home base focused on brewing innovation and new product development. It's the best of both worlds."Strategic Oppys; Collaborative, Not Consolidated on Sales & Mktg How exactly will Heavy Seas be integrated? "Our focus right now is on enhancing operational efficiency and collaboration," said Caroline. "Over time, the partnership will allow both organizations to explore strategic contract brewing and innovation opportunities that benefit the broader B3 portfolio," tho each brand will maintain its "distinct identity, supported by shared best practices, data insights, and resources." Among new areas of exploration hinted at for Heavy Seas and B3 Bev in announcement are NA products, craft sodas, "and beyond." Heavy Seas and others in the B3 platform have also experimented with spirits RTDs in recent yrs. On sales and mktg side, the approach "will be collaborative but not consolidated," Caroline added.Hugh Passing the Torch; Heavy Seas Still "Firmly Rooted" in MD Even as Heavy Seas joins the collective, it remains "firmly rooted" in Maryland, co emphasized, with Hugh highlighting that "our identity as a Maryland brewery is who we are." But after almost 30 yrs at the helm, Hugh also said it's time for him to start stepping back. "In the words of Monty Python, I'm not dead yet! I'll still be involved, but this is the right moment to step back from the day-to-day," he shared. Heavy Seas' leadership will "increasingly include the next generation," including his daughter Caroline alongside Charlie Oxendine (sales dir), Chris Leonard (brewmaster), and John Eugeni (production mgr), announcement notes. Together, release adds, they're "well positioned to guide Heavy Seas into its next era within the B3 platform."
