"What is the point of living a long life if it is one of restriction and abstinence, not joy?" So asked longevity doctor Simon Feldhaus in an op-ed published across the pond by the Telegraph early this month. And the president of the Swiss Society for Anti Ageing Medicine and Prevention isn't the only one reaching for a little more balance in alcohol discourse. At long last, more voices offer a counter to what Feldhaus describes as "the current fear-driven narrative it's become fashionable to push" around alcohol. That health-focused narrative tips toward the downsides, but a strong pushback kicked off Slate's Wet February feature of stories about alcohol. Its bottom line: think more holistically about alcohol's place in life and society. A separate piece in the Slate series emphasized the wine industry's budding Come Over October response to Sober October, working to gain some momentum around a unified campaign that encourages folks to gather over wine. The beer industry has been mulling a way to collectively communicate the "social benefits" of drinking, something the Brewers Association is urging members to leverage via a shared social media campaign for National Beer Day on April 7. Something's changing."Toxin" Talk and Other Oversimplifications In his op-ed, Feldhaus acknowledged the digital-age "wellness" meme on the topic: "alcohol is a toxin." True, but it's also "not an alien substance" to the human body. That fact is regularly brushed aside by discussions of health, "often deliberately," the doc noted. And that "toxin" mantra doesn't just paint alcohol in too broad a stroke. It also oversimplifies the notion of toxicity, which "is never a simple yes-or-no question. It is always a question of dose," Feldhaus reminds. In other words: just because something "is a toxin" doesn't mean that it's dangerous in "any" amount.As far as toxins go, "alcohol is not the most demanding substance the liver processes," Feldhaus explained. Many medicines take much more effort for the liver to deal with than alcohol. Yet "the body's detoxification capacity is highly individual," driven by genetics, he detailed, citing the gene patterns most common among folks with East Asian descent that drastically lowers tolerance for alcohol. That challenges giving universal drinking advice.The "no safe level" narrative attempts to highlight risks for chronic health concerns like heart disease and especially cancer. But that's an oversimplification as well, Feldhaus suggests. "When looking at the root cause of diseases, it is never only down to someone's alcohol intake. An individual's broader nutritional intake, physical activity and lifestyle patterns also have an impact," he reminds. Indeed, "the development of cancer or cardiovascular disease" depends on "the combination of multiple high-risk factors," not just one. He points out that plenty of older adults who drink heavily still don't develop cancer or heart disease. The comment recalls the finding acknowledged by researchers studying the efficacy of cancer warnings last year: stark language like "alcohol causes cancer" may be deemed less believable because folks see obvious evidence to the contrary.Context Matters Too, and Be Not Afraid Feldhaus adds more variables in the mix as well, further complicating the simple story that alcohol is always dangerous. "The context in which we drink actually changes biology," he argued, explaining that it "does not act in isolation. A glass of wine consumed anxiously, alone, as self-medication has a very different physiological impact than the same glass shared over a meal with friends." Cultures that develop valuing one or another experience can lead to varying health outcomes at the societal level, Feldhaus explains, citing differences between the UK and France.Ultimately, Feldhaus encourages a "more nuanced" discussion around and relationship with alcohol, which is neither "necessary," nor "risk-free." There's also a toxin at play in these conversations that goes unnoticed, in his view: "of all the emotions humans experience, fear itself is the most toxic for the body." And that's precisely what so much of the talk about alcohol is based on these days. "So much modern medicine is motivated through fear. Fear of food, fear of alcohol, fear of life," as Feldhaus sees it.Health "Fever" May be Breaking, Bernstein Suggests Bernstein analyst Nadine Sarwat spotted the same mood shift in discussions about alcohol early this year. The emphasis on potential negative health effects "reached a fever pitch" in 2025, it seemed. But early in 2026 "the fever might be starting to break," she wrote in a report published last month. That change appeared in media and press coverage, certainly, but there's also been a "clear shift in tone" and move toward "balanced and nuanced recommendations" in scientific contexts, Nadine wrote, pointing to the change in the US Dietary Guidelines, for instance.By her estimation, the tone shift started when Scott Galloway appeared on Bill Maher's show last November "encouraging young men to drink more in an attempt to get them off their screens, out of the house and tak[ing] part in society." Then there was a clear "backlash" against Dry January, especially the "performative" aspects of it, while surveys show a growing group of potential participants didn't complete a full month of sobriety.Meanwhile, "time spent socializing has been declining for two decades," federal data show. And Nadine now sees "growing push back against" screen time. Over half of adults told YouGov that they "want to reduce their screen time," with close to 70% of 18-29 year olds saying so. And almost half of adults think social media has a "mostly negative" effect, a 2024 Pew Research survey found. It's hard to imagine folks turning completely away from their screens. But they do seem to be remembering that moderate drinking, at least, "can be part of a well-balanced life and accretive to a healthy social life," Nadine wrote.(For those who patiently await the second part of our deep-dive into the ways genetic research has been used to support "no safe level" rhetoric: sit tight.
